SPOONBILL
About
SPOONBILL
Platalea leucorodia
Season
All year round.
Diet
Fish and sea invertebrates.
A white and elegant bird of great size, easily identified by the rounded bill with a very characteristic shape (similar to a spoon) that gives it its name. In this area, from a distance, it may be confused with a Little Egret (which has a thinner bill and an “S” shaped neck) or with a flamingo (shorter beak and often a rosy-coloured body).
Curiosity: To feed, it opens its beak and partially submerges it, snapping it quickly as soon as it senses an animal inside.
