About
Pancratium maritimum
Season
June-September.
A bulbous plant, which can be found in coastal areas of the Atlantic and Mediterranean. In the flowering months it can be easily identified by its very aromatic white flowers that grow up to 15cm long. It is the host plant for the larvae of the nocturnal butterfly Brithys crini, which means that the survival of the butterfly is intertwined with the subsistence of the sea lilly’s populations.
Curiosity: Its scientific name derives from the Greek “pan” (everything) and “cratys” ( powerful), a likely reference to the extreme conditions that this species has to endure in this habitat, or even the possible therapeutic capacities of the plant.
